Abstract
Organic waste is one of the major problems in many cities. The waste, generally, is collected at a sanitary landfill, composted or burnt. In many cities of developing countries, however, collecting, separating, and transforming organic waste are lacking. Thus it increases the amount of organic waste that requires costly treatment. A potential solution is the conversion of organic waste by applying the growth phase of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) (Hermetia illucens) into versatile prepupae. In the process, the organic waste might increase its economic value. Studies in Indonesia showed the high potential of this insect for managing organic wastes. However, most studies focus on one type of wastes which is only available from standardizing industrial system, not a municipal system and small industries which are the main organic producer in Indonesia. In this study, BSFL that was fed with one type of organic wastes showed shorter development period. Changes in feedstock quality from low to high protein material generally produced lower survival rate and weight with a longer development period. The results indicated the importance of the nutrition content in the early period feedstock to produce high-quality larvae and more sustainable organic waste management.
