Abstract

The coral reef is home for more than a million marine organisms that interact with each other. The damage of coral reef could decrease marine lives. Coral fish is one of the marine organisms that is impacted by the destruction. The research proposed to identify coral coverage, to analyze coral fish abundance, and to calculate the correlation between coral coverage and coral fish abundance in Enggano Island, Bengkulu. Line intercept transect (LIT) method (25 m) was used to measure the coral coverage in 12 stations. Visual census method was applied to observe the coral fish presence on the right and left the side of the line transect. The correlation between coral coverage and coral fish abundance was analyzed using multiple linear methods. The results showed coral coverage in Enggano Island ranged 99.6 - 6.6%. The highest coverage was observed in station 1 at Dua Island (leeward) (99.6%), whereas the lowest was in station 9 at Kahabi (less than 6.6%). The low coverage of coral could be caused by depth in Kahabi which was more than 21 m. This depth received low sunlight intensity; thus the photosynthesis could not occur. The highest coral fish abundance (603 individuals/125 m2) was found in station 12 at Berhau, whereas the lowest (8 individuals/125m2) was in station 8 at Kahabi. The analysis showed the strong, positive correlation between coral reef coverage and coral fish abundance (r=0.61) with Determination Coefficient of 61%.
